# Understanding Returned or Rejected Payouts: Status, Reasons, and Refunds

## How returned and rejected payouts differ on Tazapay, why they happen, and how refunds reach your balance.

When a payout is rejected or returned by a beneficiary bank, you may notice discrepancies between the status shown on the dashboard and what is reflected in external tracking tools such as UETR/SWIFT GPI. This article explains what to expect and how these situations are handled.

Why does my payout show "Success" but the UETR shows it as rejected?

It is possible for a payout to appear as successful on the dashboard while the UETR tracker shows it as rejected or returned. This can happen because:

- The beneficiary bank has returned the funds but has not yet updated the SWIFT GPI/UETR status to reflect the return.
- The UETR status is updated by each bank in the payment chain, and there can be a delay before all parties reflect the latest status.

You can verify a payment rejection by checking the GPI status code. A status of **RJCT – MS03** indicates that the payment has been rejected and a return has been initiated.

In these cases, the payout status on the dashboard will be updated to Failed once the returned funds are received and processed on our end.

How long does it take to receive returned funds?

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a guaranteed timeline for the return of funds. The processing time depends on:

- The beneficiary bank's processing speed.
- Any intermediary banks involved in the payment chain.

Once the returned funds are received, the payout will be reversed promptly and you will be notified.

Common reasons for payout rejection or return

Payouts can be rejected or returned for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common include:

- **Funds returned by the beneficiary** – The beneficiary or their bank returned the payment after it was deposited.
- **Beneficiary account closed** – The receiving account is no longer active.
- **Beneficiary name mismatch** – The name on the payment does not match the name registered with the beneficiary's bank. In such cases, please verify the exact registered name with the beneficiary and their bank.
- **CPF mismatch** – The CPF (tax identification number) provided does not match the beneficiary's registered information. When a payment is rejected due to CPF mismatch, the funds are automatically and immediately returned to the payer.
- **Incorrect bank identifier format** – The bank details provided contain an error. We recommend the beneficiary contact their bank to verify and correct their account details.
- **Missing agent bank BIC** – Required routing information was absent from the payment.
- **Internal policy of the downstream partner or beneficiary bank** – The payment was rejected due to the bank's internal rules.
- **No reason provided** – In some cases, the beneficiary bank does not provide a specific reason for the rejection. We recommend the beneficiary contact their bank directly for clarification.

Once the returned funds are received on our end, the payout will be marked as **Failed** and the funds will be credited back to your account. You can then proceed to refund your customer.

After the payout status is updated to Failed and you request a refund, you will receive two transaction hashes for blockchain verification:

- **Transaction Hash** – for the original payment return
- **Refund Hash** – for the USDC refund transaction

You can use these hashes to verify the refund transactions on the blockchain.

What should I do if the payout status hasn't been updated?

If you believe funds have been returned but the payout status has not yet been updated to **Failed**, please contact our support team with the following details:

You may also check directly with our payment processing partner to confirm the exact status and reason for rejection, as there can be a delay before the status is reflected in the dashboard.

Please provide the following information:

- Payout ID (e.g., `pot_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx`)
- VelaFi Order ID
- CPN refCode
- UETR or payment reference number
- Payment timestamp
- Client name
- Beneficiary name
- Beneficiary bank details (bank name, SWIFT code, account number)
- Any return confirmation or proof provided by the bank

Our team will investigate with our downstream partners and update the status accordingly.
